What is a performance appraisal?
A structured and formal interaction between an employer and employee where the work performance of the employee is examined. The goals of this include the identification of employee strengths and weaknesses, and the identification of opportunities for improvement, further training and skill development. Appraisals are typically performed half yearly or yearly.
Why use performance appraisals?
Some of the reasons why you might like to perform a performance appraisal:
to give employees feedback on their performance;
to identify employee training needs;

to obtain information which can be used to assist in the allocation of organisational rewards, eg. pay increases or bonuses;
to obtain information which can be used for organisational diagnosis and development.
Why Are Appraisals Important?
Companies have become aware that the success of any organisation is dependant upon its employees. Following on from this is the need to recognise who these hard working employees are and to reward them.
